The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation has formally entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) for the inaugural phase of the metro rail initiative. This initial phase aims to establish connectivity between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack within four years.

Vikas Kumar, the managing director of DMRC, expressed that this moment presents an ideal opportunity to kickstart transit-oriented development in Odisha. Meanwhile, Odisha’s Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, attended the event remotely and emphasized that the project, costing ₹6,255 crores and entirely funded by the state government, signifies a groundbreaking milestone in Odisha’s transportation history.

Patnaik underscored the significance of this colossal investment, heralding it as the largest ever made in the infrastructure of Odisha. As part of the 5T Initiative, a flagship program of his government, this endeavor is poised to redefine the transportation landscape in the capital region, heralding the dawn of a new era for Odisha.

Additionally, Vikas Kumar reiterated the potential of initiating transit-oriented development in Odisha, anticipating a significant upliftment of the economy, and fostering growth and progress within the region.

The proposed Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, spanning 26 kilometers, will feature 20 stations, including key points like Capital Hospital, Rajmahal Square, Jayadev Vihar Square, and Patia Square. The design envisions an elevated structure that will align with the median or sides of existing roads, providing improved connectivity.

This groundbreaking Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project not only aims to connect Bhubaneswar airport to Trisulia Square in Cuttack but also outlines plans for future expansion to adjacent towns such as Khurda and Puri in subsequent phases.
